International Symposium on Water Resources in Darfur"North Darfur Mega Lake"

Darfur Land Commission (DLC) & North Darfur State in Collaboration with UNESCO/ Cousteau Ecotechnie Chair (UCEC) Computer Man College, organize an international Symposium on Water Resources in Darfur "North Darfur Mega Lake".
A Challenge for Peace and Development

The researchers from Boston University Center for Remote Sensing have acquired topographic data from satellites to reveal an ancient mega-lake in North Darfur. Drs. Eman Ghoneim & Farouk El-Baz made the findings while investigating Landsat images and Radarsat data; however skeptical geologists note that many buried lakebeds have turned out to have no water underneath them.

Focus of the Symposium:

  • Exchange ideas among scientists, decision-makers, technical services of local, regional and international authorities.
  • Unite national and international activities and promote Experience sharing and Knowledge transfer.
  • Provide a timely forum for technical activities and cooperation on development of water resource in Darfur.
  • Establish mechanisms for international cooperation and experience-sharing among institutions for higher education, researches, local authorities, consulting and engineering firms and practitioners, and others, taking into account cultural, historical and, in general, human dimensions, in relation to water scarcity and global change studies.

General topic of discussion:

  • The significant discovery of North Darfur Mega Lake.
  • Future Development and the usage of the lake to end drought and desertification.
  • Hydrology of the lake and the area.
  • Geology of north Darfur.
  • North Darfur ECO systems.

Keynote Speakers:

  1. Professor Dr. Farouk El-Baz, Boston University (An overall review of the new space techniques utilize to address environmental problems).
  2. Dr. Andras Szöllösi-Nagy,  UNESCO Headquarter (The role of IHP in water resources development in conflict areas).
  3. Dr. Eltayeb  Mustafa, UNESCO Headquarter (The role of the UNESCO Science  policies to assist focusing on solving the member states national problems of environmental dimension).

Call for Papers:

Participants wishing to present papers are requested to submit a tentative title and short abstract before October 20, 2008. The full paper must be submitted three days before the specified deadline.
Note: The symposium language is English.
